Leadership and management in turbulence times

Lviv Business School of the Ukrainian Catholic University (LvBS) held round table "Leadership in times of turbulence" with invited guests Gianni Franco Papa, General Manager at UniCredit Group Ukraine, and Taras Vervega, Executive Vice President, Business Development, Sales and Marketing at SoftServe. Stefano Capodagle, senior manager of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, London moderated the discussion.

The central question of the seminar was how the crisis affected the vision of leadership in business and what is the current (crisis and post-crisis) model of leadership in the global market and in Ukraine.

Questions which were discussed during the round table:

  • What are the critical key talents/skills for business leaders today?
  • Did the crisis changed "the rules of the game" in leading people and how?
  • How quickly business leaders internationaly and in Ukraine changed their focus and priorities?
  • What does it mean building a Team in your experience? And specifically in Ukraine?
  • How would you rate Ukrainian managers compared to CEE or Europe, USA? What the strength and weaknesses, room of improvements?
And specifically "Crisis skills" do you look for?
  • What are pecularities of Leadership in Ukraine?
According to Gianni Franco Papa, the main change that took place in the understanding of leadership over the past two years is the better understanding of the leader as a person who can effectively communicate the vision and key values of the company. Leadership and accountability are two words that go together.

Taras Vervega beleives that only those companies that introduce global principles of management can be competitive today. In his understanding role of the Leader is combination of inspiring people and taking tuff decisions. Recent crises times made these qualities more vivid and many Ukrainian managers were not ready for it.
